NoBS Goes to Ohio

Rob and James recently spoke to about fifty photographers at the PPO Professional Photographers Of SouthWestern Ohio. They talked about getting publicity for your studio, the benefits of a Wordpress website, and off camera flash. Both of them also did live model shoots. James photographed a bride and groom outside demonstrating his flash techniques. Rob did the virtually impossible by photographing a two year old boy and his three year old sister.

Here's what one of the attendees had to say:

Thank you SO MUCH for coming to Dayton OH and sharing so much great information with us! I learned a lot that day and have some fire to get things accomplished with my fresh new ideas! I hope you enjoyed our warm days and parks!

Thanks much, Jodi Shannon

If you would like to have Rob and James speak at your local professional photographers chapter, send an email to interpolatethis@nobsphotosucces.com.

What Would You Do? Firing A Senior Model

NoBS member Tyson Zahner recently recounted the fallout he received after having to dismiss a high school senior rep for theft from his other business. No doubt it was a very unusual and sticky situation for him, which is why he turned to NoBS to get some input on how to deal with the senior and her helicopter dad.

Niagara School Of Imaging August 2009

Rob and James once again will be teaching at this year's Niagara School of Imaging taking place August 16-20.

Wondering what you will see with each of them? Here are their course summaries:

James Hodgins: "The Kitchen Sink":

The only thing separating outstanding photographers from mediocre ones is the ability to capture the elusive light and utilize creative composition. James’ class is an intensive class for learning practical applications and fine art styles of weddings and portraiture. He will demonstrate his many advanced tips and tricks from his unique shooting style to workflow automation, Photoshop techniques and marketing skills that have guaranteed him photographic success.

And Rob's:

Rob Provencher - How to Build Your Portrait Business

The marketing, shooting and success principles that he not only teaches and preaches, but practises in his own studio, has, over the years, been a favorite with many photographers who yearn to discover and apply the fastest, straightest line to wedding and portrait success without all the nonsense or hype. A "must attend" for the serious photographer.

This was a session with her and her little brother. She was a natural poser. We have so many great shots of her. I used the NOBS pastel action for PP.

Adventures In Portrait Lighting: Lighting Setups

So, we thought we'd inject some practical, technical information for you this month. Hence a little primer on three different types of lighting setups for portraiture. Lighting as we all know can make or break a portrait. It conveys mood, emotion, and how we perceive the subject. Before determining which lighting you will use, you need to analyze the subject's head shape and size. Choosing the appropriate lighting will emphasize the positive and flatter your subject.

In no particular order of importance, the three types are broad lighting, short lighting, and butterfly lighting. Each type has its time and place for use.

In short lighting, the light is placed in the side of the subject that is turned away from the camera. This type of lighting is used to make the subject appear thinner.

Want to make a person with a narrow face appear a bit wider? Broad lighting is the way to go. This is the opposite of short lighting. The lighting is placed on the side of the subject that is closest to the camera. The catchlights should be at the 1 o'clock position.

Finally, if you are looking for perhaps a bit more drama, butterfly lighting is for you. It's also known as glamour lighting because many fashion photographers employ this method. The light is placed high (not too high because then there will be too much shadow in the eyes) and directly in front of the face. It creates a symmetrical shadow below the subject's nose.

We hope you've found this brief overview of portrait lighting educational. If you have a particular technical topic you'd like addressed in future newsletter issues, please let us know!

NoBS Banner Contest

James recently opened up a contest for NoBS members to come up with a new design for the NoBS banner. Do you think you can step up to the plate and handle this challenge? If so, go to this NoBS link for the details and the NoBS logo to get started.

NoBS YouTube Emporium

Did you know that NoBS members can post their own photography-related videos in the NoBS YouTube Emporium? If you haven't had the opportunity to check out this little-discussed forum, you should carve out some time to do so. There are some great video tutorials that other members have taken the time to produce for other NoBS members. Here's the linky.

2009 NoBS Monthly Success Interview: Diane Wilson

This month, Rob brings us an interview with photographer Diane Wilson, who specializes in theme portraits such as fairy portraiture. She also discusses using the scene machine for virtual backdrops. She's had phenomenal success and you can hear how she does it by clicking here.

Marketing 101: Get Published

If you want to get good exposure (excuse the pun) for yourself and your studio, one ingenious and inexpensive way is to get published. James discussed this not too long ago after the great success he had with getting an article he wrote about a sailing trip published. It didn't cost him a dime in advertising and he received free mention of his studio. Oh, and he got a free trip out of it too!

NoBS member, AussieGirl (Rebecca) recently shared with the forum an instructional article she had written for a national girl's publication. The instructions were for how to create a photo book. Her results are quite good as evidenced by the accompanying images. If you are curious to see what she did, go to this link.

The Art of Getting Your Life Back

Here's how life used to be... shoot a wedding, drop off the film, get your proofs back and send them off to the client.

Doesn't that sound nice? What happened?

Digital happened!

We all love digital but these days most wedding photographers spend hours and hours post-processing their shoots. Do you really have the time to do that? We give you back your life (and your business). Our photographers are able to spend more time shooting, marketing and just plain relaxing!
