March 2012 Digital Dogbowl

Frontline Webinar Series

This month kicks off some new and exciting features on the forum. One of those new features is the Frontline Webinar Series. As you know, Rob has done a monthly interview with photographers from various stages in their careers (available in the Downloads section). NoBS has also periodically hosted some very successful and informative webinars. Now, the guys bring you the Frontline Webinar which is a marriage of the Monthly Success Interview and the NoBS webinars you've all grown to love here at the forum.

Without further ado, here is our first guest, Tommy Cooper. He happens to be a longtime NoBS member who quit his day job a year ago. His story is inspiring and we hope you enjoy the interview! Oh and please don't forget to provide us with feedback!

February Photo of the Month

Julia Sternau was last month's Photo of the Month winner for the theme "red". Here is her story as well as the story behind her winning image:

"I spent 16 years in a bad marriage in a very depressed part of Southern Illinois. I decided that I needed some way to support myself and my 4 kids. I had always enjoyed the arts of photography. I saved up enough to buy myself a halfway decent camera and a cheap set of lights. I started reading and practicing and reading some more. I started to learn PS as well.

I finally divorced him and later met a wonderful man who has supported me in every way. We bought a better camera, better lights, studied together and practiced, practiced, practiced. It seemed I had hit a wall and couldn't get any better. Then, I discovered NoBs. With the help of some wonderful people whom I've met here, who were willing to give so much of their time and knowledge and lots of CC ( which at times was hard to take) my work took off. I had hardly ever been away from home by myself , but with my husband support and encouragement I attended my first Inferno in Chicago. I t was like I was reborn. Again, with the help of some really wonderful people who were willing to share so much of what they knew, I felt like I was really mastering my craft. Without their help, encouragement and friendship I would not be where I am today. I love NoBs and the members within. This is my 3rd year being a member and I am still growing and honing my craft. I LOVE THIS PLACE!

The story behind this image was that I always encourage clients to bring personal items along to their photo session , and I would always try to find a creative use for the things they brought to me, to ensure their portrait session had a personal touch. This mother brought this adorable rain suit and umbrella to her appointment, with no mud puddles anywhere in site to accent the outfit I decided to make it rain indoors with a little PS help.

Portrait was taken my canon 5D MkII 35mm 1.4 lens and 3 AB800's 2 for backlights and the other as my main.

This marks the last Photo of the Month contest at NoBS at least for the time being. Thanks to all of our wonderful vendors for sponsoring and supporting it, and thank you to our wonderful members who participated each month!

  • A newborn composite broken down I thought I would share another recent composite with people to show how this pose is done safely. First, I put baby on their bum in a seated position with my hand supporting their head and slowly relax them into a comfortable seated position. Then, while holding/supporting the head I use my other hand to bring the hands into position. I often have a parent come assist in supporting the baby's head while I fuss with the baby's fingers to perfect the pose. See Photos

  • What I learned as a WPPI 16x20 Print This past weekend, I served as a judge for a category of WPPI’s 16x20 Print Competition. It was a lot of fun, and I learned quite a bit about the process itself. The jury panel I sat on included some incredibly talented folks, including well-known master photographers and two Pulitzer Prize winners, and honestly, I felt like I was just lucky to be included there (truly humbled). • Holy S%&*.... So I had a bridal fair on January 14 and so far have booked 8 in one week. I have never done that before. The fire side chat was great! FireSide Chat Ignites

  • New Forum setup for Photoshop and Lightroom We combined the Photoshop and Lightroom into one forum (Plus if you have a Photoshop Element Question this would be the place for it too). With Lightroom 4 announced today and CS 6 coming in this year there will always be questions about our premier digital production programs. Questions like; How do I separate someone from the background? Why won't this Action work! (that is more of a Shawn/Riff question. He is the Action Whisper) How to make a preset in Lightroom? What is RAW and how do I work with it? Why does James and Rob make rude noises when ever Bill or Riff talk about a version of Photoshop after Photoshop 7 released back in 2002? (This is just one of those mysteries of life with no answers.) New Forum

  • Have we already lost the copyright battle? While browsing Facebook this morning, and the ever increasing amount of images with funny quotes on top, I was suddenly struck by the fact that's it's quite possible we have already lost the copyright battle. More and more, the public are taking images that don't belong to them, and putting them up somewhere else, without the permission of the copyright holder. Adding a funny tagline doesn't diminish the theft. Don't Steal
