I've always enjoyed taking pictures. You know those people you see at Disneyland taking pictures of EVERYTHING, even the bushes sculpted into the shape of Mickey Mouse? Yep, that was me. I thought I was pretty fancy when I got my Digital Rebel, which was my first SLR and of course, I had no idea what I was doing. I'm the type that will teach myself everything I can, so I immersed myself in books and website tutorials, and then I decided to take a photography class at the local college. Our first assignment was to shoot a portrait, which I had never done (unless you count someone standing in front of the Mickey Mouse topiaries). So I took one of the girls I worked with to a park and shot her, and had a funny feeling that I was onto something. When I turned in my pictures for critique, the instructor (who was a local wedding and portrait photographer) took one look at them and teasingly said one word: "show-off". That was October 2005, and since then, it's been an awesome blur!

After stumbling across it online, I joined NoBs shortly after that class – and I fully blame my NoBs family for putting me on the fast track. In January 2006, I officially started Chanterelle Photography as a part time portrait photography business. I was working long hours 5-6 days a week at my salon day job, squeezing in shoots on my off days and staying up until all hours of the night editing. By March of 2007, I had moved my dining room home studio into a small office building nearby, cut my day job back to 3 days a week, and was offering wedding photography services. By July of 2008, I had an image published in Rangefinder magazine, was assisting in the development of design house by Andy Armstrong, and was slowly getting ready to retire from the salon industry. Sometimes I have to pinch myself when I sit down and think about it all. I have no doubt that the road getting to this point would have been a lot longer without NoBs – I know I can count on getting a pat on the back when I've done a good job, but I also know that someone will find a gentle way to say "you suck" when I deserve it!
