Why Blog?

According to the American Heritage Dictionary, the term blog is short for weblog. The term blog is often used as a verb meaning to "to write entries in, add material to, or maintain a weblog." Ok, now that we have that out of the way, what's the story behind the creation of the blog? Well, that's another kettle of fish we'd rather not dig through. It seems there is no clear answer as to what the first blog was or who created it. But that's not the point.

Blogging in its simplest and most innocent form is another means of communication which we have created for ourselves in order to stay connected with each other and the world. It gives our hopes, dreams, and experiences a stage to perform. It gives people an opportunity to empathize, sympathize, or disagree. The internet has allowed us to become more of a global community, but blogging has given us the opportunity to interact with each other on a much deeper level in cyberspace.

Because blogs are free for the most part, millions of people have them. In turn, because millions of people have blogs, businesses have developed their own blogs to humanize themselves and be a "regular joe" in order to connect with their consumers. It is a subversive way to get into the hearts and minds of the consumer without them even knowing they are being sucked in. Photographers are no different and are no less innocent in their intentions (evil grin).

As photographers, we now know the importance of having and maintaining a blog. It's a great way to show our latest work without having to spend hours upon hours rewriting html code in order to upload a new image. It's easy and it's fast. It's also a way to make the customer feel as if they are part of a special inner circle or family. You can't get any more personal than that. Another added benefit is that there's no obvious sales pressure. You are connecting with the customer on a personal level. Once that connection is made, they won't want to look elsewhere for another photographer because they feel they know the real you. You have invited them into your "home".

If you have not already started a blog, consider doing so. You can obtain a free account through blogger.com. If you want something very polished and high end, check out Typepad.

Good luck and happy blogging!

Hot Topic: Why Are You A Photographer?

The reasons are as many as the day is long. Photosensitive (aka Denise) asked NoBSers what inspired them into the world of photography and many were moved to respond.

What is so striking about the responses is that many of us have only been professionals for five years or less. What is the correlation evident here? Possibly it is that digital photography has made the profession of photography much more accessible and, to some degree, a little less expensive thanks to the flash card. It seems also that life changes (new babies, etc.) also led some of us to go with our heart and pursue our dreams of becoming professional photographers.

This influx of photographers within the past 10 years or so, has also pushed professional photography to evolve into a highly competitive arena. We're all looking for that competitive edge which will push us out in front of the others and make us stand out to potential customers over the joe schmoe who picked up a digital camera and now thinks he is a pro.

Ultimately, only the truly passionate will rise above the sea of newcomers. For it is the sincerely dedicated individual who strive to improve and become well balanced and knowledgeable, not only in photography, but in business as well. It is the truly passionate photographer who will take his/her lumps in the learning process and push forward.

Some other news from the Top Dog, Rob:

NoBS Monthly Chat

Did you know that once a month The NoBS Stalker hosts a chat with a special guest? We had a chance to speak with The NoBS Stalker recently and here is what he had to say about the last chat.

"My guest for the last chat room meeting was Amie. For those who have never been to one of those meetings, I usually interview the person for 10 or 15 minutes and then people can ask all the questions they want to the guest.

With Amie, the discussion was about how she could combine a business and having 3 young children at home with her. Of course, there was discussions on photography, marketing, equipment...the usual lol

A lot of information is given out during these meetings, people really enjoy spending time with other NoBS members.

Again I want to thank Amie and all my other past guests who have made these monthly meetings a success.

Looking forward to the next one very soon.

The NoBs Stalker (moderator of the chat room)"

Blogging With A Twist

It is true that each and every NoBS member has something special to contribute to NoBS, but it's not often you will find a NoBS member making a such palpable impact on so many professional photographers. New member Mai Cheri is such a person who, within a short period of time, has managed to garner an incredible amount of attention for her novel blog, Pay It Forward Photography Resources And It's Free. Here is her story about her blog and how it came about.

"It started out when I recieved something from a fellow photographer, and I offered money for it, and they wouldnt accept it, they said to "pay it forward". I racked my brain for a month to figure out what i could do to "pay it forward". What I had recieved was a pretty big deal to me, so I wanted something that could have the potential to help others, like a domino effect.

One day my husband and I were chatting on the backporch, and in the midst of him talking about work, it dawned on me. I needed to start a blog. A blog that would touch many many photographers that I could pay it forward too. I basically was going to do templates and share those, but it kind of blew up from there. Many showed interest in contributing as well. And now, wow, its become huge, real huge, more then i ever expected or had the intentions of being. The interviews are my favorite part of the whole paying it forward concept. Not only will everyone be able to enjoy the generous donated PIF (pay it forward) gifts, but they get that awesome advice too. That advice could help someone as well. Paying it forward advice is what i love to call it.

The blog keeps me busy and I'm real proud of it. In just a little over a month we hit over 17,000 visits to the blog. Thats unreal, lol. But very very exciting. We look forward to interviewing more fascinating people in the photography business along with the random PIF gifts given by these awesome photographers/companies feeling the pay it forward vibe.

Along with all of that, our hope is that when one takes, we hope that person will give too : "Paying it Forward refers to repaying the good deeds that one has received by doing good things for other unrelated people"

Creating Far Out Backgrounds

For those of us who remember the days of film, there was a neat (and somewhat expensive) tool called the Scene Machine. This add-on to the camera allowed you to use slides of different cities and textures to be projected behind our subjects. With Photoshop and selection tools, we no longer need this as all of this can be done in layers. Some of us even go so far as to create our own backgrounds using the cloud filters and colors for a mottled background, but there is another way to create even more strange backgrounds using a tool in Photoshop that most people have never used before.

Reminder: Vote Now For Silverlake Group Buy

If you are new to NoBS, each month a vote is held to determine which three backgrounds will be available for a limited time at the group discount from Silverlake Photo. Here is a recent announcement posted on the boards from Travis Gadsby of Silverlake Photo.

"We are now taking requests for the July Group buy. Please place your vote.

We will be tallying the votes on the 4th and will post the buy codes on the 5th of July.

How does the Silverlake group buy work?

It starts by placing your request for which backgrounds you would like to see offered as the three designs for this month's special. We then tally the votes placed here, as well as the votes from a few other forums that participate. By grouping together the orders and focusing our efforts on a limited number of backgrounds, we can afford to offer everyone a discount, as we save money on preparation and production time. As members of NoBS, you will be entitled to purchase any of the three designs for a deeply discounted $149.00 plus shipping.

If you wish to purchase more than one, you need to make separate orders for each background as our shopping cart will only accept one coupon per order. Make sure that you select the 10x20 size from the drop down.

Once the votes are tallied, all you need to do is go to http://www.silverlakephoto.com, choose one of the final design choices, then in the coupon box put the coupon code that we will provide after the designs are chosen.

Backgrounds will be shipped within 2-3 weeks. If you have a specific shoot coming up, please let us know and we will do what we can to accommodate your schedule.

Thank you for your continued support!

Ordering starts July 5th and goes til July 16th. ENJOY!!"

Don't miss this chance to get high-quality backgrounds that NoBS members are raving about!

Testimonial
"Rob... I'm sure you hear it all the time, but I love your stuff. You guys got a good thing going on. I graduated with a marketing degree. I purchased your wedding and baby stuff, and let me tell you, no teacher I ever had had their marketing together the way you do. It also bugs me when you buy business photography material and they don't even touch on the principles of marketing. I was pleasently surprised to finally find someone who realizes that marketing is it... the secret to photography success. It IS your business. Without good marketing your business has a cancer just waiting to spread. Anyways thanks for the help.... " Sandy Schurz, Utah

Showit Web
Want to put together a web slideshow in no time flat? Check out Showit Web. You don't need to have any programming or html knowledge to put together a slideshow. The best part is that it literally takes a couple of minutes from start to finish. We purchased the Lite version and were amazed at how easy it was to put a slideshow together and upload it to our website and blog. Best of all, our clients were absolutely delighted to have something they could show family members who live far away. The Lite version is $99 and the Pro version will set you back $199. If clients want to purchase the slideshow, there is an option available for them to purchase it through Showit for whatever price you designate. The actual cost of the DVD is $49.

Tutorial from AC
This month Andy Armstrong tackles a start to finish approach to working with his AC-CrossColor Actions. You can download Andy's actions free here and then view this video tutorial.

Exciting New Craig's Actions Released!
Gruffer (Craig) has just released a new "collection of One-Touch Complete Workflow Actions" which promise to reduce workflow and "allow the user to have a true One-Touch Solution to their image production requirements." ProShow Gold Vs. Showit Web
Recently, NoBS members discussed the pros and cons of ProShow Gold and Showit Web. ProShow Gold is primarily for PC users and allows you not only to make slideshows but also to burn a DVD of the slideshow. Showit Web allows rapid creation of slideshows for the web and can be used by both PC and Mac users. To read more detailed discussion on the two, click here.

Maternity Reflection
A lot of members inquired about how I did the reflection for this image. No, I did not use plexiglass or a mirror. It was actually much much easier than that. Here is the workflow tutorial for you.

Discovering NoBS by Neil Copeland
I originally discovered internet forums back in 1996 through my interest in science fiction shortly after I found the internet itself. There was an interactive forum online at the time called Eon4 and was about a group of people who were involved in a new form of space travel (think Jodi Foster's movie "Contact") and all of us regular people on the forum were the civilian advisory group to the official operators of the program. The interesting thing was that it was played as actually being real. Read more
