NoBS Member/Photo of the Month: Jillian Bickle

I always enjoyed photography as a hobby growing up, but never imagined it was something I could do for a living! It wasn’t until my second year of University – I was taking all the required courses to go to med school – that it hit me…I’m not doing the right thing. I had just got married and my husband and I took three weeks and went to Africa to a little orphanage in Kenya to volunteer for three weeks. This trip opened up my eyes and made me realize my passion for photography. I knew that one day, I would like to use photography to bring awareness to African orphanages. I’m not sure how I’m going to do that yet, it’s a work in progress.

When we got home, a few months later, I came across the NoBS forum on the internet, and signed up. As luck would have it, Rob and James were going to be in Toronto and put out an invitation for anyone who wanted to join them for supper. I got all excited and decided to go, dragging along my husband. Probably one of the best decisions I’ve made! I instantly liked James and Rob, and they told me I had potential (although I think they were just being nice at the time!) Rob gave me the advice to put school on hold for two years, and make a go at photography. I could always go back to school if it didn’t work out. I think if these two told me to jump off a bridge, I would!

I took Rob’s advice, and haven’t looked back. It’s been a bit of a slow start, since when I decided to make photography my career, I also began my family (two years later having 3 children under 2!) but I know what the future holds and am very excited!

My favourite age to photograph is 6-9 month babies. I just love capturing children’s innocence and freezing it in time. Weddings would be a close second though, especially since I’m getting more and more comfortable and exploring my style more.

I just want to say thank you to everyone on this forum, especially James and Rob, who have helped me out whenever I have needed it. This forum and the people who belong to it have been invaluable to my photography. Thank you.

The photo that won this month was actually just a grab shot. I had just made some cocoons so had my twin girls in them down in the studio to see how they would photograph. I was setting up my one daughter in one, and my husband had Eve in the other. He called my name, I looked up, and there he was, dangling Eve in her cocoon, a big smile on his face. Luckily my lights were all set up and on. I snapped the photo, and it was a keeper!
