December Photo of the Month : Beth Mcmenama-Griebe

Congrats go to NoBS member, Beth Mcmenama-Griebe (BellaDedans), who claims top honors for her fall-themed image.

Here is her bio and the story behind her winning image:

"I'm 31, mother of 2 wonderful children ages 6 and 3. I got into photography by accident really. I've always enjoyed beautiful art (of all sorts) and when my daughter was born, I found that my camera was the best way to express all the emotion I had inside of me from my life experiences at the moment...mommy-hood. It spread to nature, to family, and friends. I found I had something that people enjoyed nearly as much I did and decided to pursue it farther...this prompted me to research and I came across NoBS. That was life-changing, although at the time, I had no idea the wealth I had in my simple membership. So the journey began…

4 years later, I own and operate a great little business. I'm at a critical time in my life, as I mentioned I have two small children (one of whom stays home with me through the day), I go to college full-time (after many long years and obstacles, I graduate this December), I'm a wife to a self-employed husband, we travel, we own a farm, and I'm now at a point in my business that I need to hire another employee, as 18 hour days are wearing on my sanity. :O) I love every minute of it!

I do have a home-based studio. I live in the country. We have a very small community that I reside in and a small city we are close to, but I manage to work 6 days a week. Word of mouth as been the sole boost in my business. NoBS has been my only educational source (i.e. videos, forums, members, or seminars) that I can say I've gained the largest part of my knowledge...besides getting out and shooting!!

This image was taken at the client’s home. She had these horses, which were given to her by her now deceased grandfather so she wanted to incorporate them into the images. They were very loving and the whole session went well. Part of their fenced in area was located in these woods and with the Fall colors and the soft filtered light coming through, I had to take this. I had initially composed and shot some images of them facing me with but thought it would be more story-telling if they were "taking a courtship-type walk" away from me rather than a posed "look at me with my horse" portrait. They were as tickled as I was that we won this contest!"

  • Setting up a "Living Social" deal - Advice? -""Living Social" I assume is like the "groupon" deals I've seen people talk about. They advertise a great deal from you, they get 1/2, you get clients... "Living Social" likes to target the people with more of a disposable income, so you see a lot of spa treatments, hotel, and weekend get aways, etc. ...If anyone has done a "groupon" or "living social" deal and learned anything from it, we'd love some advice." - LIVING

  • 30 years old..want to be photographer..late? - "So I used to do graphic/web design for a while till I realized I hated it..tried to do some other odd jobs here and there and found out that I didn't like them as well. Then I decided to get a camera to get pics of my friends kid for fun. Ever since this past summer I have just been loving photography the more I get into it. But I'm sort of left wondering if 30 is a bit too old to get into this." - OLD?

  • She asked me to fix THESE/God awful. - "I got an email from someone who found me on facebook, and asked me if I could "fix" some of her wedding photos, that she would pay me. I told her I would have to look at these photos to see what has to be done and how much to charge. I was assuming some kind of cloning out of something small. Well.." - JOKE?

  • What do you use your iPad for? - "YAY - I just rec'd my iPAD 2 today!! Would love to know what you use yours for. What sort of Apps do you find useful? With all of this iCLOUD stuff, is there a way I can work on culling my images (done in Lightroom on my Mac) through the IPAD? " - iPad

  • Seniors in Canada - "As most of you know the Senior market in Canada is very different than in the US but I think there is some possibilities in my area. I live in a small city of 45K people that has a total of 5 highschools. Probably less than 1000 grads in the whole city. There has been a lot of mention on Scott Crosby's program, but I am curious to know if anyone in Canada has used it successfully?" - CANADA
